Danish on a Sunday screenings for Autumn 2017 have just been released, and the programme features a wide array of film experiences, counting some of the most acclaimed, new fiction films.
'The Man' is a drama centered around Simon (Søren Malling) who is the king of the Danish art scene. Out of the blue his long lost son - also an artist - appears. The success of the son deeply provokes and challenges Simon. 'Letters for Amina' is a dark thriller about a young man who has just been discharged from a psychiatric ward. He is armed with one single purpose - to find Amina, his friend from school, whose letters was a source of hope during his hospital stay.
Two of Denmark's best actors, Nikolaj Lie Kaas and Trine Dyrhold, star in 'You Disappear'. Frederik (Lie Kaas) and his wife Mia (Dyrholm) live a seemingly perfect life with their son. But when Frederik is arrested and charged with embezzlement, Mia is forced to revise her perception of her husband. Another star known from the international hit series 'Game of Thrones', Nikolaj Coster-Waldau can be seen in the thriller '3 things'. Coster-Waldau plays Mikael who is the prime suspect of a big money deposit robbery and an expert on explosives. The police wants to make a deal with him and he makes three very specific demands in return.
Classics and documentaries
Some beloved classics will also be screened. In the touching 'The Soldier and Jenny' from 1947 Bodil Kjer plays a young woman accused of illegal abortion. In a Copenhagen filled with chauvanistic men, a young soldier (Paul Reichhard) is the only one protecting Jenny. Lone Scherfig's 'Italian for Beginners' (2000) was the fifth Danish Dogme film and portrays six vunerable individuals whose lives are interwoven through an Italian class.
Before winning an Oscar for 'In a Better World', success director Susanne Bier recieved an Oscar nomination for 'After the Wedding' (2006). Jacob (Mads Mikkelsen) has dedicated his life to helping street children in India when a businessman offers him a donation of four million dollars. In return, Jacob accepts to take part in a Danish wedding which catapults him into the most intense dilemma of his life.
Finally Danish on a Sunday features spectacular documentaries shot around the world. 'Tutti a casa - Power to the People?' follows the Italian a protest movement that vows to dismiss all politicians and bring the people power. The party wins a stunning 25% of the votes, but what happens when political ideals meet parliamentary reality?
In China no one wants to take care of children with a shameful background. 'Waiting for the Sun' follows life in an orphanage for children whose parents are imprisoned for serious crimes. 'The Last Men in Aleppo' follows volunteers from the White Helmets and their daily encounters with life and death in a city where war has become the norm.
