‘Modern Times’ depicts Chaplin’s encounter with industrial developments, centralisation and the transition to a mass society in interwar USA. Charlie gets a job at a factory where efforts are made to streamline the workers’ routines. Unsurprisingly, the little tramp causes chaos in the machinery and literally gets caught in its massive cogs. Afterward, he is admitted to a psychiatric hospital and later takes part in a political demonstration, landing him behind bars. Ultimately, though, he wins over the beautiful poor girl, played by Chaplin’s then-wife Paulette Goddard. ‘Modern Times’ was the last film featuring the silent tramp in the lead role. The film has refined sound effects and was Chaplin’s last film before he fully embraced talkies with ‘The Great Dictator’.
