Danish feature films at the box office 2000

Now available
online at the DFI website are estimate figures for admissions for Danish
feature film releases 2000.
Ranking first on
the chart with 335.000 admissions in its first 13 weeks is the
international animated coproduction Help! I'm a Fish (produced by
A Film and directed by the duo Stefan Fjeldmark and Michael Hegner).

Close behind is
the "buddy movie" Flickering Lights with 305.000 admissions in 9
weeks (produced by M & M Productions and directed by Short Film Oscar
winner Anders Thomas Jensen).
However, Lone
Scherfig's romantic Dogme comedy Italian for Beginners (produced
by Zentropa), would set the highest score when looking at admissions for
the first 3½ weeks: the film attracted as many as 265.000
cinema-goers and has almost reached the 300.000 mark in its four week
release. All three films are still major attractions at the box
office.
Looking at the
Christmas-New Year holiday week, all of five Danish, and two Swedish films
scored on the top twenty: besides the above mentioned films, the remaining
were the television based children's film Pyrus (directed by
Martin Miehe-Renard), the heart-rending feature film debut The
Bench (directed by Per Fly Pleidrup for Zentropa) and the two Swedish
films with Danish co-finance: Tsatsiki by Ella Lemhagen and
Once in a Lifetime by Danish director Susanne Bier.
During the autumn
school holidays in mid-October, traditionally the best week for children
and family films, the three Danish films Help! I'm a Fish,
Miracle (directed by Natasha Arthy for Nimbus Film) and Thura Film's
Beyond, directed by Åke Sandgren stood up to tough competition
from the international blockbusters Chicken Run and The
Tigger Movie, but nevertheless national features reached a market
share of 50% during that week, the highest share for the period since
1997.
The national
market share of the box office for the complete year is estimated at
20%.
Figures for 2000
from the national bureau of statistics, Statistics Denmark, will be
available late February 2001, as well as the top twenty chart for "all
films".
