On the
recommendation of Vinca Wiedemann, film consultant at the Danish Film
Institute, the DFI board of directors has allocated DKK 5 million (Euro
670,000) to an English-language feature film 'It's All About Love', an
epic romance of the 21st Century, to be directed by Thomas Vinterberg,
winner of the Grand Prix in Cannes 1999 for his 2nd feature 'The
Celebration'. In the leading roles are Joaquin Phoenix and Claire Danes,
and a strong supporting cast includes Douglas Henshall, Margo Martindale,
Alun Armstrong and Mark Strong.
As in the making
of 'The Celebration', Vinterberg teamed up with Mogens Rukov to write the
original screenplay. Birgitte Hald of Nimbus Film is producing on a budget
of DKK 85 million (Euro 11.4 million) which has been raised with
investments from Denmark, Germany, Great Britain, Japan, Holland, and
Sweden, among others.
In their press
release of 23 April, Nimbus Film quotes Thomas Vinterberg:
"I have always
wanted to make a love story. I see 'It's All About Love' as a romance
which embraces the thriller genre (.) In a world where people become more
and more self-obsessed and where the speed and complexity of everyday life
increases by the minute, the basic conditions for love seem difficult. It
is almost as if life itself negates love. This very conflict is my basis
for 'It's All About Love'. (.) in all humbleness my portrait of our
modern society".
The film will
shoot on location and in studios in Denmark and Film i Väst in Sweden with
extensive second unit filming around the globe. Shooting will be completed
at the end of June 2001. A worldwide release is expected in summer of
2002. Trust Film Sales' Annakarin Ström will handle sales for non-English
speaking territories while FilmFour will be handling sales for
English-speaking territories.
