Filmhouse in August

FILMHOUSE. Kubrick retrospective, Spanish diva Penelope Cruz, the dark and unsweetened comedy of Todd Solandz, and Christoffer Nolan's mesmerizing neo noir—all at the Cinematheque this month. Also, check out noon screenings and movies for kids.

An overview of films in English or with English subtitles—from the Filmhouse August programme.

K for Kubrick—Retrospective Part I

The films of Stanley Kubrick have been central to what we think of as great cinema since the mid 1950s.  Kubrick was intent on taking the temperature of a sick society, wrote Sight & Sound. Throughout his career Kubrick created films that would stimulate his audience to think about serious human problems. His canon of films testifies that he valued the artistic freedom which he worked so hard to win and used so well.

Todd Solondz' darkest, dankest crevices of humanity, all in comedy

20100803
Director Todd Solondz.

"Say what you will about Solondz, he's an artist with a worldview. And it's not rosy, says Carina Chocano in her review of "Palindromes" in Los Angeles Times. "In "Welcome to the Dollhouse," "Happiness" and "Storytelling," Solondz challenged facile moral judgments by rooting around in the darkest, dankest crevices of humanity. In his fifth feature, he emerges clutching a grand unifying theory of human behavior in his fist and drops the whole fatalistic bag of cheese on your lap." Todd Solondz was honoured at Venice (Life During Wartime), Berlin and Sundance (Wellcome to the Dollhouse) and Cannes (Happiness).

Christopher Nolan—mesmerizing neo-noir

23616
Image from Christopher Nolan's Following.

About "Following", Frederic and Mary Ann Brussat wrote: In his debut as a filmmaker, Christopher Nolan has fashioned a mesmerizing neo-noir drama that is totally suspenseful. Here he uses the flash-forward and doubling back techniques so effective in his well-received Memento. This psychologically rich drama explores the shadow side of yearning where addiction turns into a trap with many painful lessons.
