More female directors?

Susanne Bier is but the third woman director to receive an Oscar in the Best Foreign Language category, succeeding Marlene Gorris for "Antonia's Line" in 1996 and Caroline Link's "Nowhere in Africa" in 2003.

Talking to L.A. Times' Amy Kaufman on the red carpet before the Oscar gala, Bier notes the imbalance:

"I think there should be more female directors. (...) I don't think they are overlooked, I just think that women in general in our society don't have the space they should have. It's a larger discussion about society, it's not just the film industry, it has to do with the way we look at women and men."
