Numbers for the first half-year of 2011 reveal that Danish films have performed well at the cinema. With a national market share of 29% after the first 26 weeks and 1.7 m tickets sold at the box office, the result is on a par with 2008 which landed on a year-end total of 33%.

"One should be careful not to draw any hasty conclusions from a half-year result, but of course it's satisfying to note that Danish films still show strong audience appeal, far surpassing the numbers from the past two years. And judging from the films to come in the next half-year, there's no cause for concern," says Head of Distribution at the Danish Film Institute Steffen Andersen-Møller.

In all, nearly 6 m cinema tickets have been sold within the first 26 weeks of 2011 which is slightly below the average for the past seven years.

Top 10 in Danish cinemas
Three Danish films enter the Top 10 of the most popular films at the box office in the first half-year. "All for One" by Rasmus Heide climbs to first place on the chart with 378,000 tickets sold, closely followed by "Pirates of the Caribbean – On Stranger Tides" and Mikkel Nørgaard's "Clown", the latter selling 855,000 tickets in all since its release in December 2010.

Upcoming films
Looking ahead, there are several promising titles on the bill for the rest of 2011. August sees the release of "A Funny Man" by Martin Pieter Zandvliet and the satirical animation "Jensen & Jensen". Also, expectations are high for the animation "Ronal the Barbaren", playing from September, and the thriller "Those Who Kill – Shadow of the Past", in cinemas from November.
Among the international titles expected to draw crowds at the box office are "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows – Part 2", which premiered in mid-July, the Norwegian "The Headhunters" opening in September and, not least, the highly anticipated "Twillight 4" in November.
