Warriors of Love chosen for Locarno Competition

Simon Staho's Danish-Swedish feature film "Warriors of Love" is selected for one of Europe's most influential festivals, the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland. The film will run in the Filmmakers of the Present Competition.

"Warriors of Love" is a contemporary version of Romeo and Juliet's tragic romance about love and revenge. The film is about two young lesbians who are forced to commit murder in order to rescue their love.

Simon Staho calls the film “a declaration of war against those who reject love! Against the sceptics of the heart and the ultra-conservatives of romance! The film is a tribute to excessive love. To obsessive love. To love that calls for sacrifices, scars and gunshot wounds. To love that creates miracles and tragedies!”

Festival audiences in Berlin, San Sebastian and Chicago have previously bowed to Staho's daring, thought provoking stories. Most recently his Swedish-Danish co-production "Heaven's Heart", selected for last year's Berlinale.

"Warriors of Love" stars the two young Swedish actors Josefin Ljungman and Shima Niavarani. It is produced by Zentropa Entertainments5, XX Film and Film i Väst in cooperation with Swedish Television and with support from The Danish Film Institute.

TrustNordisk handles international sales for "Warriors of Love". Domestic release is scheduled for late 2009.

Locarno International Film Festival, in league with Cannes, Berlin and Venice festivals, belongs to FIAPF's (International Federation of Film Producers Associations) classification of so-called A-festivals. The festival has in previous years selected films by major European and U.S. film directors, among them Stanley Kubrick, Mike Leigh, Milos Forman, Spike Lee, Claude Chabrol, Atom Egoyan and Michelangelo Antonioni.

Films shown at Locarno often find a distribution channel with top European independent distributors.
