Denmark's Oscar entry revealed 19 September

OSCARS 2017. The final candidate to represent Denmark in the Foreign Language Oscar category will be elected on 19 September from a shortlist of three films.

"The Commune" by Thomas Vinterberg, "Walk with Me" by Lisa Ohlin and "Land of Mine" by Martin Zandvliet were singled out by the Danish Oscar committee on 15 August in the first round of the national Oscar election process.

Now the date for naming the final candidate is approaching. The national committee, made up of the Danish Film Institute and film industry organisations, will be meeting on Monday, 19 September, to decide which film will be Denmark's submission to the Academy Awards 2017.

A press release will be issued on 19 September around 4-5 p.m. (local time).

The Commune

Erik and Anna are a couple of academics with a dream. With their daughter Freja, they set up a commune in Erik's huge villa in an upmarket district of Copenhagen. With the family at the centre of the story, we are invited into their dream of a real commune.

Walk with Me

Deployed on mission in Helmand, Afghanistan, 25-year-old Thomas is heavily wounded. At the local rehabilitation center he meets Sofie, an ascending ballerina from the Royal Danish Ballet who is helping a relative regain strength after a long-term sickness. Thomas desperately wants to get back into the field and feels a growing impatience as he fails to progress as fast as he would like.

Land of Mine

Martin Zandvliet, 2015

Taking place in May 1945 only a few days after the end of the war, the film tells the story of how a group of German prisoners of war were brought to Denmark and forced to disarm the two million land mines that had been scattered along the West Coast by the German occupying forces. In charge of the enfeebled young men performing the dangerous task is Sergeant Carl Leopold Rasmussen. Like so many of his fellow Danes, he has a deep hatred for the Germans after having suffered five years of hardships during the occupation.
