MEDIA support to Danish documentaries

NEW DOCUMENTARIES. IDFA winner Pernille Rose Grønkjær's documentary "Love Addiction" is one of three new Danish projects backed by EU's MEDIA programme.

With a total of 406,000 euros, MEDIA's TV Broadcast programme has granted support to three new Danish documentary films.

According to head of MEDIA Desk Danmark, Ene Katrine Rasmussen, it's quite an achievement that no less than three Danish projects are among the 23 films on the MEDIA list. "Only France, with its traditionally large production of films, has received more grants," says Ene Katrine Rasmussen. "This, I think, bears witness to the fact that the Danish documentary industry holds a strong international position."

When love takes control

"Love Addiction" is the title of Pernille Rose Grønkjær's project, which investigates love and its power to control your life. Through different case stories the film sets off its journey into the phenomenon.

Pernille Rose Grønkjær received IDFA's Joris Ivens Award in 2006 for "The Monastery", a story about old Mr. Vig and a young Russian nun, Sister Amvrosija, whose paths intertwine. Sigrid Dyekjær produces "Love Addiction" for Danish Documentary Production and with support from the Danish Film Institute.

Sundance winner and Zentropa

Mads Brügger has received funding for a project still in development. Brügger's latest film, "The Red Chapel", took home Sundance's World Cinema Jury Prize – a story about a comedian-journalist trio testing the limits of humour in North Korea.

Peter Engel and Carsten Holst produce for Zentropa, and New Danish Screen, the DFI talent funding programme, is supporting the project.

Bloodbath in Indonesia

In Indonesia during 1965-66, around two million communists were massacred. The bloodbath was carried out daily by death patrols recruited by the military.

"Freemen" is a film about the executioners and the society that they have created. Shooting takes place i modern-day Indonesia, where the executioners live side by side with the victims' families.

"Freemen" is produced by Signe Byrge Sørensen for Final Cut and supported by the Danish Film Institute.
