US critics applaud Paprika Steen

INTERNATIONAL RELEASE. "Applause" has hit the mark with US critics who, not surprisingly, single out Paprika Steen for her outstanding lead performance.

"A fearless, tour-de-force performance by star Paprika Steen." And Variety's Alissa Simon is not the only critic who makes use of a six-star vocabulary to highlight the Danish actor's performance in "Applause" that is playing in selected theaters in Los Angeles and from 21 January in New York.

Hollywood Reporter, Screen Daily, Variety, IndieWire, The Chicago Sun Times and Slant Magazine are impressed by Steens tremulous interpretation of the admired but troubled Thea, who is trying to restore control over her life and contact with her two boys after her days of drinking. "Harrowing and brilliant", "intense and stripped-down" and "mesmerizingly nuanced" the critics agree, and most recently Karen Durbin of the New York Times hailed Steen's Thea as "one of the best performances of the year."

The film's US distributor World Wide Motion Pictures Corporation is promoting Paprika Steen as a 2011 Oscar candidate for a Best Actress nomination.

Martin Pieter Zandvliets debut feature film is written by the director together with Anders Frithiof August and produced by Mikael Christian Rieks for Koncern Film. The trio Zandvliet, August and Rieks are currently working on their next production, "Dirch", about the great Danish comedian Dirch Passer. Expected release is September 2011.

"Applause" is out on DVD in Denmark.
