Danish cinema continues to enjoy a strong profile at one of England's
most important festivals, the London Film Festival, LFF (20 October - 4
November 2004). The films selected to participate are "Brothers" by
Susanne Bier, "Aftermath" by Paprika Steen, "King's Game" by Nikolaj
Arcel, "In Your Hands" by Annette K. Olesen, and "Strings" by Anders
Rønnow Klarlund.
Susanne Bier and Zentropa's "Brothers", welcomed by critics after its
release in August, is currently screening for packed audiences in Danish
theatres, while international audiences are able to enjoy the film at the
Toronto Film Festival, and at San Sebastian where it has been selected for
the main competition.
Paprika Steen's critically acclaimed feature film debut "Aftermath",
produced by Nordisk Film, received Best Actress Award at Karlovy Vary in
July. "Aftermath" has become a festival hit and will be screening at
festivals worldwide this autumn and winter, including Rio de Janeiro,
Pusan, Sao Paulo, Canberra and Los Angeles.
"Aftermath" is also shortlisted for Britain's prestigious award: the
Sutherland Trophy, awarded by the British Film Institute (BFI) for the
most imaginative first feature screening in the London Film Festival.
Awards will be presented at the festival's closing ceremony.
Nikolaj Arcel's first feature film "King's Game", a political thriller
produced by Nimbus Film, will be released in Danish cinemas on 1 October.
The film screened in a Piazza Grande programme for spectacular,
entertaining and innovative films at Locarno Film Festival in August.
Arcel is no novice on the festival circuit; his film-school productions
won awards at Munich, Clermont-Ferrand and Tel Aviv.
Annette K. Olesen's second feature film, "In Your Hands", produced by
Zentropa, has been honoured at a number of festivals, including Paris,
Seattle and Torin. "In Your Hands" was selected for the main competition
at this year's Berlin Film Festival; while her first feature film, "Minor
Mishaps", swept away Berlin's Blue Angel Award in 2002.
Anders Rønnow Klarlund and Bald Film's unique and original feature film
"Strings", yet to be released in Denmark, received its world premiere in
August at Venice Days, a programme under the umbrella of the Venice Film
Festival. The film was given a five minute standing ovation and Screen
described it as a revelation.
