On Frederiksberg you find Den Sønderjyske By. A beautiful and charming property complex with 308 apartments with small gardens, where the rent is cheap. Students, single parents, pensioners, artists, and families with small children live here in a wonderful association. At least that's how it is until the beginning of December 2018, when the world's largest capital fund Blackstone buys Den Sønderjyske By from Frederiksberg Boligfond for DKK 538 million.
The tenants, led by resident chairman Søren, choose to take up the fight by arranging large and small demonstrations. Many people support them, and the press covers the small tenants' struggle and opposition against the large American capital fund. The tenants get even more hope when an old deed from 1932 turns up.
The deed dictates that if the property is ever sold, the tenants must be offered the entire property with the 308 apartments for DKK 2.8 million!
The residents hire the lawyer Lars Langkjær, who is one of Denmark's best housing lawyers, to conduct the trial. A lawsuit that could eventually turn all residents into housing millionaires.
However, the unity and idealism are put to the test and the dilemmas come rolling in. Because if the tenants choose to take the case to the end, it could lead to bankruptcies and a meltdown of the entire rental market in Frederiksberg.
