The ballad of the Viking king, Holger the Dane

Laila Hodell, Denmark, 1996

82 min.DK/FeaturePuppet films, Children's films

This puppet animation feature is an adventure that began 1200 years ago: New-born Holger receives his name at the court of Sigfred, king of the Danes, who worship Odin. But to the south Charlemagne, king of Franks, is
gathering the tribes into an impire, Christianising heathens and sending troops out from his capital at Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) in all directions.
Little Holger is taken hostage when the Danes refuse to submit.
The Danes have other planes; the Vikingplan appears at this time. Holger grows up at the Frankish court, and is trained for the knighthood; his quests take him far and wide, including Spain where the primary eneny of
the Franks, the Saracens, still dwell. From Spain his travels take him as far as the Himalayas, only to return to the northern forests once more.

At the end of the film Holger is a grown man who has seen different religions, cultures, affairs of the heart, dreams and the myths that live on inside us.
