Billy is about 10 years old. Together with his uncle and his cousin and Genie the elephant, Billy tries to secure a hand-to-mouth existence in Bangkok's chaotic swarm of people. The little troupe buys inexpensive vegetables, which they re-sell to tourists and to others who are fascinated by the huge, good-natured animal and want to feed it. However, even though elephants are sacred creatures in Buddhist Thailand, the little group is most certainly not all that popular with the police in the metropolis. They are chased from one place to another, and Genie does not have an easy time with the hustle and bustle of the big city. Billy is also longing for his mother and for the life in the countryside.
