According to a 2011 census 27 million people in Indian are disabled. Seven out of ten are unemployed in a country with scant welfare. The social enterprise Avacayam wants to change that by generating incomes for the disabled through an employment program. In 'Gathering flowers' we follow three persons who are all a part of it.
Every morning at seven, the mentally retarded Pawan walks through the narrow streets of Varanasi to gather flowers from the city’s many temples. The flowers are cut and dried, so they are ready to become new products that the company can sell. Narendra, who was struck by polio as an infant, drives his four-wheeled scooter around the area surrounding his village to help other disabled people to produce incense sticks, coloured powder and the specialty "seed bombs".
Meera is a widow and mother of four. Her eldest son Surendra has an eye disease. Hopefully she will be able to afford medicine with her income from Avacayam.
