The devil's railroad

Simon Plum, Denmark, 1997

48 min.DK/Documentary

In the heart of the tropical rain forest of Brazil a 400 kilometre long railroad was built at the beginning of our century from one deserted place to another. The dream of riches and a blind faith in progress forced the project: The railroad was to carry rubber to the growing industry of the rich world. The project came up against problems from the start, but was carried through in spite of incomprehensible human costs. The dream became a nightmare, and today the jungle has spread its merciful green carpet over the fantastic work of man. This documentary reveals the past and takes us on a last beautiful and tragic journey on the rusty tracks of the jungle.
