North Greenland Sealers

Jørgen Roos, Denmark, 1967

19 min.DK/Documentary

After giving birth to a daughter at the hospital at K'anak, Anna returns home in a helicopter to her husband Ajaco, who is a sealer at a trading station. In 35 degrees of frost he drives his dogsled out onto the sea ice, where he shoots a seal, skins it on the spot, and returns home to a meal of freshly boiled seal meat. He trades the sealskin for merchandise from the trading post. In the winter the family gets their water supply by melting ice from the glacier.
