'Earth Spirit' is an adaptation of the German playwright Frank Wedekind’s eponymous play from 1895. The film was banned by the Danish censorship and therefore never premiered in Denmark. "Unfortunately she choses subjects so degenerate and perverted that they cannot be shown to a broad audience," Roskilde Avis wrote about the leading lady Asta Nielsen in 1923.
