The film describes living conditions in the slum districts of Copenhagen around the turn of the century. The appearance of the streets and the backyards and life as it was lived in them form the background for an examination of five aspects: daily toil, the pub, prostitution, social welfare and prison. The aim has been to give an interpretation of a reality in which misery and hopelessness dominated
