Tom Kristensen's 1930 novel "Havoc" remains a work of towering impact. Its central character is a literary critic on a Copenhagen daily, who boozes his way through crises of political and religious convictions from Marxism to the Catholic faith. His marriage and his job lost, he seeks deeper into the bottle, but somehow also into existentialist truths about life and himself. The film version also portrays an era and a city.
