Near the turn of the century, 3 English ladies and 4 school girls made an excursion through the rugged Icelandic interior. One of the women, Hetty, described the journey through wry daily letters to her friend Nancy. These letters, and excerpted journals of earlier scientists narrate contemporary scenes of Iceland. The film recalls a romantic time when scientific and literary prose still shared a common language.
