China - In the midst of the watermelon season

Where is the spring roll? Is China now open to travellers? In 1984 somebody wrote to a newspaper: 'The smaller towns in China are closed - you can only see the rice farmer from the train window'. Could it still be true? By riding the Transsibirian Railway a journey to China came true - the experience of a spring roll that did not smell of the local grill.
