The Afro-Cuban religion Santeria is worshipped as an integrated part of daily life in Nelvys' family who live on the outskirts of Havana, Cuba. Nelvys is a cheerful and active 12-year-old girl, who suffers from asthma. Parallel to the medical treatment her father weeds out the evil through rituals and in dialogue with the African gods. When the disease aggravates, she is consecrated in the religion through a multi-day ceremony, and the goddess of the sea, Yemaya becomes her personal guide. She must follow Yemaya's rules and sacrifice to her.
