Drozdov talk of his understanding of 'freedom'. He compares present freedom as it used to be in the Ukraine; he describes how close friendships, earlier as now, create a space in which a feeling of freedom exists. Life in this private sphere he calls living on the islands. The islands existed during the Soviet era, as they exist now. The political institutions have changed their names, but the islands remain.
