Sasha, a young Russian aristocratic girl at the end of the 19th century, dreams of the Great North and yearns for Oloukine, her grandfather, a famous scientist and Arctic explorer, who hasn't returned from his latest expedition to conquer the North Pole. Sasha has inherited the polar bug, much to the chagrin of her parents, who have arranged for her to marry. Defying her destiny, she runs away to join Oloukine way up north.
