A group of transsexual Mexicans make their living as cabaret girls at the Plaza club in Los Angeles, where they are known as "Queenas". The club and the fascinating shows form the intimate visual framework of the film in which we meet Melissa, who left her family thirty years ago and has never seen them since. Via Melissa we meet a number of the girls and discover what induced them to leave their families and culture in search of their own identity. Cutting through their bloody cosmetics surgery and grotesque upbringing we suddenly see that they have succeeded in adopting their extraordinary destinies with courage and dignity as we repeatedly return to the Plaza, the show, the music, the dancing and the patrons.
