Denmark's great package holiday king Simon Spies (his surname meaning "eat" in English) coined the phrase "Eat, travel, and be happy". The eccentric, later to become a multi-millionaire, despatched the first coach-loads of tourists to Mallorca in 1957. Six years later his company had a turnover of 30 million Danish kroner a year. In this film portrait a number of the people closest to him talk about the student, chairman, friend, lover, and employer Simon Spies. The young film-maker Steen Herdel was hired in the early 1970s to make a film featuring Spies in which everything went backwards; the film was never made, but Herdel followed Spies for several years and his footage combined with archive material and interviews provides a multi-faceted portrait of a complex personality.
