Kaj and Gerda, the lost children of Hans Christian Andersen's story;about the Ice Queen, appear among contemporary characters in a film, deeply indebted to Freud, that employs an almost subconscious free flow of narrative devices, fiction and documentary, music and dialogue, black and white and color, to merge fairy tale with realism. The dream sequences are nightmarish with gruesome flashbacks to the characters' childhood.
