In 'Spell It' we follow the 9-year-old Pasha, who lives in a small town in the "Warm Heart of Africa" - Malawi. Pasha loves to read and spell, and despite her young age, she is determined to get a good education. In the spring of 2016 Pasha won Malawi's national spelling bee - a concept borrowed from the American spelling bees, where children compete in spelling difficult words.
For the first time, a pan-African spelling bee is held, where participants aged 9-15 represent nine English-speaking African countries.
Normally, the main prizes for spelling competitions are small cash prizes, but at this competition participants can win a scholarship to a prominent South African university. Pasha is the youngest participant in the competition, but is nevertheless not afraid to participate.
'Spell It' is a story about a Malawian girl, her dreams and ambitions, and how she spells her way through life. It offers a view on what education means for a child in a developing country, where basic education is not a human right, but something only for the privileged few.
