Health in Bhutan

Hans Wessing, Denmark, 2000

74 min.DK/Documentary

It is more important to promote the gross-national happiness than to increase the gross-national production. That's the way the Bhutanese king formulated a prospective vision for his country in an address before the United Nations. Buddhism plays a great role in Bhutan, and in the government's overall strategy, development is defined as being spiritual, emotional and economic well being. The Danish collaboration in the form of extended foreign aid with Bhutan's health care service system is coming up for evaluation after seven years of assistance. So, the evaluation-secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took charge of dispatching a team of impartial and critical international experts to Bhutan. The film follows the course of the evaluation team's work and, at the same time, offers an exceptional insight into the mountain country's culture and health care program, which combines traditional methods of treatment with modern medicine.
