Producer. Holds a Bachelor of Arts in Media Production from the University of Bedfordshire, England, and a Master's degree in Film Studies from The University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
Hellström has produced a number of documentaries. Among these are 'Moon Rider' (2012), which won a Reel Talent Award at CPH:DOX, as well as 'The Fencing Champion' (2014), 'Chikara – The Sumo Wrestler's Son' (2014) and 'The Distant Barking of Dogs' (2017), which all screened at IDFA. 'The Distant Barking of Dogs' won the First Appearance award at IDFA, was nominated for a European Film Award and shortlisted for an Oscar.
'A House Made of Splinters' (2021) won for Best Direction in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance in 2022.
'Flee' (2021) was selected for Cannes Festival, won the World Cinema Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and has since toured festivals around the world, including in Annecy, Telluride, Toronto and New York, winning a number of awards. The film was nominated in three categories for the Oscars 2022.
Hellström has also co-produced a number of feature films, including 'The Nile Hilton Incident' (2017), which won an award at Sundance, and 'Good Favour' (2017), which screened at Toronto and Göteborg Film Festival.
From 2004 to 2008 Monica Hellström served as Production Manager at the Film Workshop in Copenhagen.
