Director. Born 15/4, 1960. After studying architecture in Jerusalem and London, Susanne Bier graduated as director from the National Film School of Denmark in 1987.
Bier's feature film debut, the Swedish-Danish 'Freud Leaving Home' (1990), received several international awards, as did her next feature film, 'Family Matters' (1993).
Her breakthrough came with the romantic comedy 'The One and Only' (1999), which sold 840,000 tickets in Denmark. Two box office hits followed, the Dogme films 'Open Hearts' (2002) and 'Brothers' (2004). The latter premiered in 2009 as an American remake with Jim Sheridan as director.
'After the Wedding' (2006) was nominated for an Oscar, and subsequently Bier made her US debut with 'Things We Lost in the Fire' (2007) starring Halle Berry and Benicio Del Toro in the lead roles.
Bier's international success continued with 'In a Better World' (2010), winner of both a Golden Globe and an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film as well as a European Film Award for best director.
She returned to romantic comedy with 'Love Is All You Need' (2012). The film starring Trine Dyrholm and Pierce Brosnan was honoured with a European Film Award for best comedy.
Bier has directed the Netflix film 'Bird Box' (2018) and the international series 'The Night Manager' (2016), which won two Emmys and three Golden Globes, and 'The Undoing' (2020).
