13-årige Jim og hans kammerater er skolens sorte får og dem, der konstant står til afstraffelse på den strenge katolske Trinity High School på Manhattan. For drengene er basketball håbet om en fremtid. Da en af Jims venner dør af leukæmi, tvinges Jim til at tage stilling til livets mere alvorlige sider. Nedturen tager fart. Han mister efterhånden interessen for basketball, og de ugentlige weekendtrip bliver til daglig junk. Det ender med at blive en kamp på liv og død for at skaffe penge til næste fix.
