I nutidens Portland i Oregon USA, viser en kriminalbetjent sig til at have evnen til at se, at tilsyneladende almindelige mennesker momentant omdannes til hæslige monstre. Han er en såkaldt Grimm, der har til opgave at holde balancen mellem mennesker og monstre.
