Juni 1940. Frankrig er besejret. Kolonne efter kolonne af slagne, franske soldater er ad Rhinbroerne på vej til krigsfangenskab i Tyskland. To af fangerne kommer tilfældigt i snak, og da de er anbragt i en tysk landsby, planlæger de snart at flygte.
