Alain Getty, en ung og succesrig ingeniør og hans kone Benedikte (Charlotte Gainsbourg) flytter til en ny by, da Alain skifter arbejdssted. De inviterer Alains nye chef og hans kone (Charlotte Rampling) til middag en aften. Men forskellen på de to par kunne ikke være mere ekstrem: På den ene side det unge mønsterpar og på den anden side et parforhold ætset af had og krænkelse. Denne frygtelige middag og opdagelsen af en mystisk død gnaver i deres køkkenafløb, markerer starten på nedturen for Alain og Benedikte og deres før så perfekte liv.
