For tredje gang rejser Marty McFly og den skøre opfinder Doc Emmett Brown frem og tilbage i tiden. Marty er strandet i 1955, og Doc er kommet tilbage til 1885, og dertil må Marty rejse for at redde Docs liv. Doc møder i 1885 den store kærlighed i form af en romantisk lærerinde, og de rejser frem til 1985 for at fremvise deres to børn, Jules og Verne, for Marty.
