6-årige Hushpuppy bor sammen med sin far i et lille samfund beliggende nær verdens ende. Da faderen bliver ramt af en mystisk sygdom og ikke længere kan beskytte hende, begynder naturen at opføre sig underligt: Temperaturen stiger, polerne smelter og fører en hær af urokser med sig.
