Landmanden Tomas immigrerer med sin kone Solveig og parrets to børn til Canada i 1920'erne. Han drømmer om at dyrke jorden, men tørke og den økonomiske depression knuser familiens levebrød. Solveig foreslår, at de rejser tilbage til deres hjemland, men Tomas nægter at lade sig stemple som en fiasko. Hans forsøg på at redde familien får tragiske konsekvenser.
