Den på alle måder korrekte og pligttro butler James Stevens, og den effektive husholderske miss Kenton, styrede i 1930'erne sammen den store husholdning på godset Darlington Hall. Deres arbejdsgiver havde udprægede nazistiske tilbøjeligheder, men Stevens lod som om, han ikke opfattede, hvad der foregik i huset.
