Obel Film

Cinema owner and film importer Gunnar Obel began producing films in 1971, such as Ole Ege's documentary "Pornography" (1971) and the feature film adaptation of Danish author Steen Steensen Blicher's short story "The Work of the Devil" (1972). Obel got the rights for Danish author Leif Panduro's novels, which were adapted into "Traditions, Up Yours!" (Edward Fleming, 1979), "The Thoughtless Lover" (Claus Ploug, 1982) and "The Indecent Ones" (Edward Flemming, 1983), which were some of the most watched films of the years of their releases. Obel Film also gained great success with the adaptation of Danish author Klaus Rifbjerg's novel "The Chronic Innocence" (Edward Flemming, 1985). Also, Obel gave Lars von Trier's low-budget film "Epidemic (1987) economic support and subsequently became co-producer on von Trier's "Europa" (1991).

Gunnar Obel's son, Michael Obel, has been an independent producer since 1991 in the company Obel Film/Thura Film, which has produced film by directors like Ole Bornedal and Bille August and the popular children's film-series "My Sister's Kids" (Martin Miehe-Renard og Niels Nørlev, 2001-2015).
